2011 Peel Thunder Holiday Clinic Report

I would like to extend my thanks on behalf of the Peel Thunder Football Club to all kids and parents involved in making the 2011 Peel Thunder Azztek Kitchens School Holiday Clinic, a fantastic success for everyone involved. A big thanks must go out to our major sponsor for the day Azztec Kitchens and the Warnbro Football Club for supporting with the venue and catering on the day.

We were very pleased to see our biggest numbers at a holiday clinic (just under 200), which smashed our previous best of around 120. The kids who attended the day were greeted with the presence of Fremantle Football Club players, which included Anthony Morabito and Hayden Ballantyne, whilst they walked away with a Peel Thunder replica jumper, a show bag of goodies and a wealth of knowledge passed on from the Peel Thunder players.

Planning for the next clinic which will be held at Bendigo Bank Stadium in the July school holidays is underway. Whilst a date is yet to be set, we can confirm that the West Coast Eagles will be attending. This also beckons as a very good opportunity to come and view our brand new facilities at Bendigo Bank Stadium, whilst again getting hands on coaching from the Peel Thunder players.

If interested you can contact Kristy at the club on 9535 3448 or email bgillam@peelthunder.com.au

Once again many thanks to all involved and we look forward to seeing you in July.

Regards

Brennan Gillam

AFL Interstate Player Allocation to WAFL Clubs

The allocation of interstate AFL recruits to WAFL clubs has been finalised for the 2011 AAMI WAFL Premiership season.

Under the current WAFL rules, both Peel and Perth were entitled to two interstate recruits due to winning less than five games. Peel also received an extra selection as part of WAFL equalization measures. Further players were allocated in reverse premiership order among the bottom five clubs from 2010.

WAFL and High Performance Competitions Manager Darren Davis said the allocation of these players into the WAFL system would benefit both the clubs and the aspiring AFL players.

“In the past the WAFL clubs, and particularly the coaches, have done a great job integrating these players into their clubs and helping them to play their best football,” Mr Davis said.

“It is not easy coming to a new State, training with an AFL club and playing in the WAFL competition but players in the past have enjoyed the experience and many have been outstanding in their contribution to their adopted clubs.”

Interstate players available for allocation were as follows:

Fremantle Dockers: Jack ANTHONY, Peter FAULKS, Josh MELLINGTON, Viv MICHIE, Jayden PITT, Nick LOWER, Gavin ROBERTS

West Coast Eagles: Andrew GAFF, Scott LYCETT

Interstate AFL player Order of Selection:

1. Perth (priority pick) Nick Lower

2. Peel (priority pick) Scott Lycett

3. Peel Peter Faulks

4. Perth Jayden Pitt

5. Peel Viv Michie

6. South Fremantle Andrew Gaff

7. Subiaco Jack Anthony

8. West Perth Josh Mellington

9. Perth Gavin Roberts

From the Coach's Box - Rnd 10

Well a couple of droughts were broken in WA during week…plenty of rain on Friday…and then it rained goals for Peel Thunder on Saturday with Peel recording their first win for the season.

To all the faithfuls hopefully you were there to see it, and if not you were able to listen to an exciting game on the radio. It was a much deserved win and all the players stuck to the task and played four consistent Q’s of football, applying sustained tackling pressure to their opponents all day to record a 20pt win.

Some may ask…what was the turnaround from previous weeks?...simply some belief and a genuine effort from all players enabling them to create that window of opportunity…and this week they took it! And we don’t underestimate the win as we have never beaten Subiaco at their home ground in our history.

Kicking with the breeze in the 1st Q we started well to kick 2-3 before Subi opened their account, but it became evident a strong Subiaco were not going to allow Peel to dictate and by ¼ time the score had tightened to Peel 5-2 leading Subi 4-4. Our 2nd Q effort proved significant where we kicked an outstanding 7goals into the breeze to outscore Subi who managed only 3 goals with it. New recruit and Full Forward Ryan Herring turned on a clinic kicking 4 goals and set up another, while debutant Travis Murphy kicked 4 first half goals. This proved to be the match winning quarter.

As expected Subi came at us hard in the 3rdQ but to the players credit they showed great resolve this week and did not concede, maintaining a buffer on the scoreboard of 16pts at ¾ time. Come the last Q and kicking into the breeze we had set ourselves the challenge to hold firm and not capitulate. Lead by Robbie Beswick and Ash Thornton in defence, and a Herculean effort by our 2nd game ruckman in Phil Pohlenz-saw providing ground level opportunities for onballers in Healey, Jones, Nye and Brown the players responded to the challenge and in fact outscored Subi again to set up a 20pt win.

Congratulations to Dean Beswick and Travis Murphy who made their league debuts for Peel against Subiaco. Both are graduates of our development program and colts system, and they did themselves proud. They bring the total to 10 players who have graduated to league football in 2011 from the 2009/10 colts teams which underlines the youthfulness of our squad.

Results:

League: Peel Thunder 19-16 defeated Subiaco 16-14

The better players were Ryan Herring, Ash Thornton, Robbie Beswick, Phil Pohlenz-saw, Kristin Thornton and Travis Murphy

The main goal scorers were Herring 7; Murphy 4; Holmes 2

Reserves: Subiaco 22-6 defeated Peel Thunder 6-9

The better players were B Fotheringham, R Mason, L McKenna, A Payrits and A Weal

This week: Peel Thunder V’s South Fremantle @ Fremantle Oval…5.00pm start

See you at the footy.

From the Coach's Box - Rnd 5

Our trip the newly badged Browne’s Stadium to play Perth proved to be a disappointing one with both League and Reserves being convincingly beaten by a much improved Perth outfit. After being wooden spooners in 2010, they have certainly showed what new found commitment, believe and hard work can achieve. They were clearly superior with their leg speed and foot skills, and certainly showed us how much further improvement is needed if we are to take the necessary steps forward in 2011.

A poor 1st Q proved to be the difference in the game with Perth getting away to a quick start to kick 3 goals before we could get our hands on the ball. Although we worked hard to get back into the game, Perth’s lead at ¼ time of 6-4 to 2-1 was decisive. Peel did make a charge during the 2nd Q and at times had Perth under pressure but we were unable to convert opportunities. 3 missed goals from the goal square did not help our cause and highlighted our poor skill and decision making errors that were evident at times during the game. Clearly we should have been closer than the 9-7 to 4-5 scoreline at half time.

From the Coach’s Box - Rnd 5

To the players credit they did respond after ½ time and played some of the football we know we are capable of. The flat spots in games are proving critical to the overall results and Perth too was able to take advantage of this and kick too many easy goals. To kick 10 goals after half time to Perth’s 11 showed that we can compete when playing at our best.

We do need to focus on playing four consistent quarters of football, and when we do then I’m sure wins will come our way.

Results:

League Perth20-14 to Peel Thunder 14-9

The better players were Ryan Herring at CHF, Dev Macfarlane in defence, while Rhys Healey and Brendon Jones tried hard as midfielders. Congratulations to Lindsay Lawler who made his league debut for the club coming from our colt’s squad in 2010. Unfortunately we suffered another serious injury early in the 1st Q with our talented wingman Kieran Butcher dislocating his shoulder and could take no further part in the game. We do wish ‘Butch’ a speedy recovery.

Reserves Perth 15-12 to Peel Thunder 10-7

The better players were Josh Wilson in defence and Travis Murphy playing in the midfield. Bradley Holmes finished with 5 goals and showed a return to league football is close. It was pleasing to see Rhys Senior, Brad Green and Callan Eddy get through a full game after returning from injury.

This week we travel to Joondalup to play an undefeated West Perth. So another big challenge for the group, but one they will take up!

See you at the footy.

Trevor Williams

Holiday Clinic 2011

The 2011 Azztek Kitchens July holiday clinic was held at Bendigo Bank Stadium on the 20th July with just under 300 children aged from 6-15 in attendance on the day. The players were treated to specialised coaching from the Peel Thunder players, Senior Coach Trevor Williams, ex-Fremantle player Troy Cook as well as 7 current players from the West Coast Eagles. Every participant received a Peel Thunder jumper kindly supplied by Azztek Kitchens. Peel Thunder Community Development Officer Brennan Gilliam stated "The 2011 Azztek Kitchens Holiday Clinics were a huge success with the April Clinic in Rockingham having approximately 200 players in attendance and a further 300 here at Bendigo Bank Stadium in July. The total of 500 players is remarkable and it is through sponsorships like Azztek and the work of the District Staff with the Peel Thunder Staff that made the days so successful". Gillam stated that in 2012 the club is hoping to have a third clinic in the South West Region.

MANDURAH TRAGEDY and OUR FAMILY OF FOOTBALL

Twice I have heard the great Kevin Sheedy talk about the “Family of Australian Rules Football’ and how those who have volunteered their time and played the game share a special bond. In the early hours of Wednesday morning three members of the same family and part of our family of football suffered a tragedy that has taken them from us.

Brett Spies (father) was an active volunteer for Mandurah Centrals Junior Football Club, son Ben was vice captain of the MCJFC U16’s, and I coached Georgina (Georgie) who played U12’s Aussie Rules in season 2010. All were passionate supporters of Peel Thunder and hoped Ben would join PT Colts in the next year or two. Georgie and her mother were at Bendigo Bank stadium on Saturday night after the Swan Districts game to watch the PT Thunderbirds play from the grandstand seats of our new facility. Being only 13 years old she had to wait another year before she could join the Thunderbirds squad. For Georgie that year could not pass soon enough.

Having joined the trainee umpire program, Georgie umpired her first four Aussie Rules games that same Saturday during a junior carnival. She boasted to me how much money she had made and how one day she hoped to be the AFL’s first female field umpire. I was in no doubt, she would.

Aussie Rules is no ordinary game. You will remember your involvement in football all the days of your life. Treasure these times.

As a mark of respect the players of MCJFC will wear two black arm bands this coming Saturday. Brett, Ben and Georgie we thankyou for making our lives that much richer and for being part of our ‘Family of Football’.

David ULLYETT
PTFC Membership Sub Committee,
sponsor and passionate supporter.

THUNDER ROARING TO REMAIN ALIVE IN 2011

By Chris Pike

PEEL Thunder continues to hit back hard after a tough start to the 2011 season and now has strung together almost two months of strong football to get up off the bottom of the ladder, and remarkably not be out of the finals' race as the battle for fourth spot heats up.

With byes the first two rounds and not having a home venue for the first part of the season, the Thunder lost their first seven games of 2011, but have been able to turn it around impressively since.

The first victory came in Round 10 against Subiaco and from there the Thunder have recorded wins over East Fremantle, Perth, West Perth and Swan Districts while only narrowly going down to South Fremantle and East Perth.

It's not out of the question that Peel could have won all seven of those games with a bit of luck, but five of the last seven is impressive enough and has the Mandurah-based side just two games behind fourth-placed East Fremantle.

While the run home against Claremont twice, Subiaco twice, South Fremantle and Perth isn’t easy, if Peel can win all those games, or possibly five of them, an historic first finals berth isn’t out of the question.

However, for now coach Trevor Williams is just focusing on continued improvement and on the goal of trying to beat all teams at least once in 2011. While East Perth will elude them, Claremont is the next target this Saturday at Bendigo Bank Stadium.

"It's a big test. We are looking forward to it and we played them in what was our first game, and their Round 3 and they were red hot. We actually played some pretty good footy that day, but got beat by a very good side. We will be keen to see our measure of improvement against them now because we know that Claremont is a quality side," Williams said.

"We looked at the season and when we got off to a bad start we honestly said that we want to beat each team once. Last year we were reminded constantly that we won three games and didn't win the wooden spoon, but basically only beat Perth and the only other team was West Perth. To get the credibility that we need and the respect, we have to beat some of these better sides.

"We know that there is a bit of a logjam there just below fourth spot, but you just have to keep playing good football week in and week out. The draw is not too bad for us and we get a few games at home because we had only one in the first seven rounds, so at the back end of the season it's good. At the end of the day, you just have to turn up to play the right style of footy."

Saturday's 63-point win over reigning premiers Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval was a terrific one for Peel as well and it was set up by seven straight goals in the first quarter and the lead even blew out to as much 83 points when Rhett Mason goaled in the last before Swans got some consolation goals.

Williams and everyone at Peel knew that Swan Districts had plenty to play for, but in the end the Thunder's rock solid back-line, midfield led by Kristin Thornton, Jordan Jones and Brendon Jones, and forward-line of Ryan Herring, Brad Holmes, Matt Battye and Scott Lycett was too much.

All season long Peel's focus has been on quick and direct ball movement, and Williams is delighted with how it continues to develop.

"Our focus has always been on not to complicate the game and when we have the ball to use it efficiently. Statistically we don’t get the same numbers as other teams, but we do try and be more efficient about how we use the ball. Limiting our turnovers and controlling the ball is important, and we were able to do that well this week when we got it," he said.

"We've adjusted our style of play a little bit as well where we just need to basically kick the footy a bit more than other teams probably. Last year we had Bradley Holmes and Matt Battye as centre half-forward and full-forward, but this year we've got Scott Lycett and Ryan Herring so we have big targets to kick the ball to."

While Kristin Thornton and his brothers Ash and Bryce, Rhys Healey and Ryan Herring are impressing, so is Jordan Jones and even more so in recent weeks since moving into the midfield. He had another 27 possessions and two goals on Saturday.

"The AFL boys have certain parameters in which they have to play and be coached, and West Coast was keen for Jordan to spend most of his time in defence, but mid-season is gone and they are probably saying that the shackles can be released to see what else he can contribute," Williams said.

"Over the last two weeks in the middle he's been good and he has enjoyed it, and we've enjoyed having him around the footy."

Peel's defence even without Jones, continues to perform well led by Blayne Wilson, Peter Faulks, James Flaherty, Devin McFarlane and Mitch Green as well.

"We've tried to be really stable down there and tried to keep it down to about seven blokes who flick through. Mitch Green has been taking their rotating midfielder and he can run with them," he said.

"That's the area from last year where we had to improve in. To get Faulks and Flaherty, who are just died in the wool defenders, just sets the tone and these other kids are now learning that this is what you have to do. They have been fantastic for us."

Rob Beswick also did an outstanding job restricting Brett Robinson to 13 disposals after he had 36 the last time out against Perth.

"The last two games he has played on him now and has done a really good job. I was pleased with that," Williams said.

"Bessie is around a 50-game player with us now so he's been in the system now and he has to realise that he has to be adaptable. Some teams present him with a good match up and some teams don’t. When they don’t he has to be challenged to win his own ball, but when there's a good match up for him he can certainly play that role."

Peel's reserves also recorded an impressive win over Swans on Saturday with the likes of Brad Triplett, Ryan Nye, Liam McKenna, Aaron Payrits, Jye Warren and Chris Luff putting pressure on the league side for spots in the team.

‘PTFC Past Player Wayne Barnden Running for Regional Men’s Health and Prostate Cancer

Peel Thunder Past Player Wayne Barnden is assisting with the awareness of Men’s Health in Regional WA by participating in the ‘Mates 500 Relay’ raising funds for the ‘Regional Men’s Health Initiative and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’.

On the back of Shane Crawford’s recent run from Adelaide to Melbourne raising money for Breast Cancer, a group of mates from Manjimup are setting about a feat of their own.

The mates have been involved in the coaching of the Lower South West Football League’s, Landmark Country Football Championships team for the past three years. “Mates 500 Relay” – mates running for men’s wellbeing, is the name of the run and the footnote given to assist in the message delivery. Beneficiaries from the run will be The Regional Men’s Health Initiative and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Money will be raised through various fundraising activities and sponsorship.

“Mates 500 Relay” will be conducted from 5am Tuesday 22nd March 2011 till 12.00pm Friday 25th March 2011. Six mates, Paul Omodei, Heath East, Anthony Stubberfield, Tim Lyster, Mat Johnston and Wayne Barnden will run in relay format almost 500km during the 79 hours. Each leg of the relay will be a minimum of 1km and on some days each runner will complete 27km. Along the way they will run through 11 towns across 5 different shires taking in the LSWFL district.

Sponsorship, monetary donations or in-kind product, as in any event, are a vital part of the “Mates 500 Relay”. We hope that we can gain support to assist the runners in their quest to raise funds to be used by these charitable organisations (the Regional Men’s Health Initiative and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia). This will assist these organisations to continue the very good work they are currently doing and to be able to continue this into the future.

Each year in Australia, close to 3,300 men die of prostate cancer - equal to the number of women who die from breast cancer annually. All sponsorship money will be forwarded to the 2 organisations with no expenses deducted; separate fundraising will cover expenses that maybe incurred.

For further details or to donate or sponsor.

Please contact Participant and PTFC Past Player - Wayne Barnden -0413 195 304.

New State 18's Coach Appointed

THE West Australian Football Commission has appointed Michael Pratt to the role of State 18s Head Coach following an extensive selection process involving a number of high quality candidates.

Pratt, 39, is a product of the WAFL and High Performance coaching pathway, having developed under the guidance of highly regarded mentors such as Craig Starcevich, Rob Wiley, Trevor Williams and Mark Neeld .

Pratt, who has also coached WAFL Colts and been an assistant at WAFL League, State 20s and TAC Cup level, said he was looking forward to working with the most talented young players in Western Australia, as well as developing his own coaching credentials.

“I am super excited about getting involved. It is a great opportunity and I am really looking forward to getting started,” Pratt said.

“It was a great experience being involved as a midfield coach this year. I stepped away from coaching Colts full time to get involved with the talent academy and I really enjoyed the opportunity.”

WAFC High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich congratulated Pratt on his appointment and said he was an excellent fit for the State 18s program, which aims to not only develop young players but up-skill coaches and support staff for success at an elite level.

“There was an excellent level of interest in the role and the quality of applicants was of the highest standard,” Starcevich said.

“It is great to have a coach like Michael progress through the pathway and into this role. We focus on providing a pathway for everyone that is involved, whether it is a player, coach, assistant coach or trainer.

“Michael is qualified as a Level 3 coach and has the ambition, commitment and experience at both a senior and development level so this is a great appointment for the Academy.”

Pratt commenced as an assistant coach with South Fremantle in 2004 and then spent 2005-07 as an assistant coach at the Western Jets in Victoria’s TAC Cup competition. He returned to WA and coached Peel Thunder Colts to two Grand Finals between 2008 and 2010 and was named WAFL Colts Coach of the Year in 2008.

During his time as Peel Thunder Colts Coach, Pratt saw 19 players progress to League level and five drafted onto an AFL list. He was also involved with WA’s State 20s as an assistant coach in 2009 and 2010 and as an assistant League coach with Peel Thunder and WA’s State 18s side in 2011.

He now runs his own fitness centre after sacrificing a high profile corporate career to focus more on his aspiration of coaching football at an elite level. He will commence in the role immediately, with the first player intake scheduled for late November.

Starcevich also paid tribute to outgoing State 18s coach Brad Wira for his contribution to the State Academy over the last few years.

“Brad has been a wonderful ambassador for the program and instrumental in the development of the players and everyone else he has been involved with,” Starcevich said.

2012 STATE 18s SCHEDULE

June 2 – QLD V WA (Blacktown International Sportspark)

June 10 – WA v NSW/ACT (Patersons Stadium)

June 17 – WA v VIC Country (Patersons Stadium)

June 29 – WA v SA (Skilled Stadium)

July 4 – VIC Metro v WA (Eithad Stadium)

Appointments are still being finalised for a new State 16s Head Coach and Talent Academy assistant coaches.

Update from the Coaches Box

Monday 9th saw our senior squad return to the training track after the Christmas/New Year break. The squad of 70 players were put thru their paces and all players endured a tough session. There was positive evidence that players had committed to their program over the break and turned out in good shape. Our fitness and conditioning coach in Martin Kelly began our next round of weights and measures and it was pleasing to see targeted players skin folds had improved. We welcome our interstate recruits in James Bristow, Jamason Daniels and Mitch Keddell who have all arrived and settled into Mandurah. If their efforts on the track last night are an indication of what they offer in terms of work rate and leadership then they will be the very valuable additions to our football club.

The players are aware that the next 6 week block of training will be intense and build the platform from which we will launch into the playing season of 2012. We have our pre season camp scheduled for the weekend of 3-5th February at Kukerin, with our 1st intra club scratch matches planned for Thursday night 16th Feb and Sat am 25th Feb.

See you at the club - Trevor Williams, Senior Coach

Football Manager – Marty Atkins resigns

The Peel Thunder Football Club last night accepted the resignation of Football Operations Manager Marty Atkins.

Marty leaves Peel Thunder Football Club to take on the Chief Executive Officer role at the Perth Football Club.

“Marty has been at our Club for the past 2 seasons, serving as Football Operations Manager and has offered our Club a wealth of football knowledge and experience. It is a credit to both Marty and the club that he has now moved forward in his career and we wish him well in his new role at the Perth Football Club. Marty’s departure opens the door for an applicant that would like to join the team in the Football department that boast’s the best facilities in the WAFL. We have pin pointed people we feel will complement our vision and will seek them out immediately as well as considering applicants outside of this group with the right experience and knowledge. The club has worked very hard in the past three years and has concentrated on finances, facilities and football development. ” said Peel Thunder Chief Executive Officer Russ Clark.

Peel Thunder Football Club has positioned themselves to be a formidable contender for WAFL Finals in Season 2012 and will continue to strive to be the best Club in the WAFL.

Headland's eight goals too much for gallant Peel.

Writen by Chris Egan

A spectacular performance by Pat Travers in his return to Rushton Park was unable to stop an outstanding effort by Des headland who led his young team to a 45 point win.

Kristin Thornton got the Thunder off to a great start to the game, with a calmly slotted goal scored from a tight angle on the boundary. However this would spark Des Headland to score four goals for the quarter as Subiaco took a 16 point lead at the opening change.

Travers enjoyed being back at home with 13 of his 32 possessions coming in the first quarter.

Thunder's Ryan Herring opened the second quarter with a goal, though Headland continued his scintillating form with a 5th goal of the game almost immediately afterwards. Peel would outscore the Lions in the second quarter with late goals from debutants Eddie Dann and James Bristow closing the gap to just one point at half time.

A cheeky fourth goal to Dann put the Thunder in front in the first minute of the second half. Unfortunately for Thunder the 5 point lead would only last a few minutes with Subiaco responding immediately with the next two goals to open up a nine point lead at the ten minute mark of third quarter.

Headland's eighth goal tight on the boundary would gave Subiaco a 22 point lead, which would prove to be the match winner. Travers worked tirelessly in the third quarter with another 9 possessions for the quarter.

Like the second quarter, Herring opened Peel's account in the fourth quarter with his fourth goal of the match. However this would spark Subiaco once again, outscoring Peel Thunder four goals to one for the quarter to secure the win for last year's Grand Finalists.

Des Headland was the difference with eight goals from eleven scoring shots and 20 possessions.

Debut players for Peel all had a handy impact with Travers , Dann, Herring and Crichton the best for the Thunder.

This week Peel Thunder travel to Brownes Stadium to take on the highly rated Perth Demons.

Wrap up from the weekend by Chris Egan

Peel v Perth

31st March at Brownes Stadium.

A great fight back by Peel Thunder was ended by a late Brad Fry goal as the Thunder went down by five points at a tense and sometimes hostile Brownes Stadium.

The first quarter was a rather scrappy affair with both sides making some ball handling errors. The Demons had the early ascendancy leading by 2 points at the first change with James Bristow’s two goals and Pat Travers eight possessions being the highlight for Peel in the first quarter.

Perth outscored Peel 7 goals to 2 in the second quarter, however Bristow's third goal and Sheridan’s 13 possessions for the half would be the best in a rather lacklustre second quarter performance by Peel. Some poor decision making and basic skill errors by Peel saw the Thunder trailing by 38 points at the main change.

The Demons got away to the best start of the third quarter when Ross Young brought up the Demon’s 10th goal and extended the lead out to 44 points. At this point it looked like the Thunder were going to fall away to a heavy loss.

However it was the Thunder to gain control of the football for the remainder of the quarter with Ash Thornton bringing up Peel’s 5th from a set shot. Pat Travers capped off a good third quarter for Peel as they closed within 26 points after a well worked move allowed him to slot the ball straight through the big sticks from fifteen meters out.

A goal to debutant Jamason Daniels and a fourth goal in a row for Peel from Scott Lycett closed the game to a twenty point margin at three quarter time.

Lycett’s second goal of the game and first of the final quarter brought the margin down to thirteen points. Immediately afterwards Clint Garlett scored a dribbling goal to close to a seven point margin.

Peel scored their seventh straight goal when at the 17 min mark Kristin Thornton converted tying up the match before Perth got a goal back ten meters out after a high tackle on Michael Mather.

A goal by Kristin Thornton sparked jubilation as the Thunder drew one point in front early into time on of the last quarter but Peel were to be denied when a goal at the 26 min mark by Brad Fry put the Demons up by 5 points and ended the game.

Ladies Day - Saturday 19th May

Peel Thunder Ladies Day - 19th May 2012

Peel Thunder Football Club continues to be aware of their Community and is supporting two great charities on the 19th May when Peel Thunder take on East Perth Royals – supporting ‘Ovarian Cancer’ and the ‘Friends helping Friends’ charities.

Driven by Club Captain Brendon Jones fiancée, Elise Heal, Peel Thunder will be holding a PTFC Ladies Day function to raise much needed funds and creating awareness of Ovarian Cancer. Included in the $35 ticket price guests will receive game day entry, private function, champagne throughout the afternoon, fun and games, silent auction and finger food. Guests are encouraged to wear a touch of teal and dress cocktail style.

Every woman needs to know the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. In Australia three women are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer every day. Please support this cause as continued research is needed, more information can be accessed at http://ovariancancer.net.au/

Peel Thunder will also be acting as a drop off point for the 100 Bras for “200” Girls campaign an initiative of the ‘Friends helping Friends’ group. This heart-warming initiative that was born out of tragedy when a young Peel resident Mitch Gillam was tragically killed in a scooter accident, whilst holidaying in Bali.

Mitch loved his life and Peel Thunder have taken this opportunity to support the Gillam Family in this campaign as they have been long term supporters and currently Mitch’s cousin Brennan works as Community Development Officer and is a player for the club.

In February 1800 bras were collected, taken to Bali and distributed amongst the desperately poor, however, it was seeing the sheer joy on the face of a woman in tattered clothing when she was handed a beautiful, lacy, feminine bra that a new goal of 10,000 bras was set! I’m sure there are many of you who can offer “support” by donating your unwanted, unused, oversized, too bright, not bright enough, too sexy, not sexy enough bras to this fun campaign. Check out the moving YouTube vision by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGad7HM6cyg

The WAFL fixture on Saturday 19th May, Peel Thunder v’s East Perth in conjunction with Ladies Day are supporting the Bring a Bra Campaign and Ovarian Cancer. Please bring any unwanted, near new bras along to the game and pop them in the pink bins provided.

If you are unable to make it to the game, Peel Thunder Football Club, Dower St, Mandurah are now a drop off location and any bras can be left at the front office.

For further information about Ovarian Cancer please check out the Ovarian Cancer Australia website http://www.ovariancancer.net.au/

From the Coach's Box - Round 7

Written by Trevor Williams

From the Coach’s Box

Our trip to Joondalup to play West Perth turned ended in a loss for both League and Reserves, while the Colts fought out an exciting draw.

After a very poor and embarrassing performance against SF the week before, one which i acknowledge as the senior coach was not acceptable by any means, and as supporters have written in and shared with me, was a step backwards. And no longer do we make the excuse of being young and a developing list; because most clubs are in this position and it is time to draw a line in the sand. That is something we did this week and the players endured a solid week at training in preparation for the ANZAC weekend clash. It was put to the players to live the ANZAC Spirit, share their values and show courage and mateship to challenge West Perth all day to come away with a win.

The response from all was very positive from the start of the game with Peel playing with endeavour and energy to lead WP 3-5 to 2-2 at quarter time. Working into the breeze during the second quarter was going to really reflect how much we were prepared to sacrifice today to stay in the game. There was a real resolve evident in conditions that were starting to worsen as rain set in. We stuck to the task to lead by 2pts at half time.

Into the 3rd quarter and West Perth, as they do at home raised the bar to kick 2 goals quick goals, but we were not to be denied and the players maintained their work rate to keep us in the ‘battle’. At 3 quarter time we trailed by only 5pts and the players were up and determined to reward their hard work in the last quarter. In dark and wet conditions West Perth again kicked 2 early goals, but not to be denied and led by a hard working Brad Holmes up fwd we were able to close the gap to 8pts going into time on. A disallowed soccered goal moments later took its toll and West Perth went on to win by 15pts.

Yes the effort was what we expect and require from the players each week but it is not acceptable to have effort without results; and we must learn to pay attention to detail and get the small things right more often if we are to win games. The players did give themselves enough opportunities to set up a win but some critical errors in decision making proved to be the difference.

Congratulations to Toby Gianatti and Brayden Sutton who made their League debuts against West Perth. Both were very influential players throughout the game and we look forward to their continued development.

Results: League West Perth 13-17 defeated Peel Thunder 11-14

Main Goal scorers: Bradley Holmes 5

Best Players: Jones, Gianatti, Crichton, Sutton, Holmes

Reserves West Perth 16-12 defeated Peel Thunder 12-8

Main Goal Scorers: Herring 4; Young 2

Best Players: R Beswick, Herring, O’Driscoll, M Jones

I enjoy the feedback and responses from our loyal supporters and over recent weeks some have enquired about players who showed good promise for us in 2011 but are not featuring in 2012. Phil Pohlenz-Saw as a developing ruckman has chosen to dedicate his time to studies and was not able to commit to Peel Thunder for 2012 and Rhys Healey returned to Melbourne for family reasons.

We do have confidence in the ability of this group to take us forward and we will continue to work hard to get some much needed wins on the board.

We now go into a bye this weekend, giving Coaches and Players the chance to work on areas to improve in readiness for another tough game against Claremont at home on May 12th.

See you at the footy.

Orzel enjoying new opportunities with Thunder

http://www.wafootball.com.au/wafl/3138-orzel-enjoying-new-opportunities-with-thunder

Article Writen by - Chris Pike WAFL

MATT Orzel played 99 games at Claremont and showed he was a more than capable league footballer, but found himself unable to cement a regular spot the last two years that he felt he deserved and now he's getting that with Peel and rewarding the Thunder with some strong form.

Orzel came through the ranks at Claremont, made his league debut in 2006 and played 99 league games while kicking 73 goals and showing that he was a dangerous player with his left-boot as a lively half-forward who could have stints in the midfield.

While proving he could play well at league level, he was relegated to being mainly in the reserves the last two seasons with Claremont and played in the back-to-back premierships.

He grew increasingly frustrated with that and the 27-year-old felt he should be playing regular league football. That's why he eagerly listened when Peel coach Trevor Williams called and now he's more than happy with the move.

"It was very frustrating and down there (at Claremont), there was just no reward for good form really with the amount of AFL guys they had. Before the New Year, Trevor said I could come down and I met all the guys, the facilities were great and it was a decision that I'm 100 per cent happy with now," he said.

"I came down this year for a new change up and fresh start, and it's great just to be playing league footy. I think I'm playing where I deserve to be playing. I trained hard, had a big pre-season and it's falling into place."

As well as recruiting Orzel for this season, Peel also signed East Perth pair Pat Travers and Brendan Hancock as well as Victorian pair Jamason Daniels and James Bristow who have added some much-needed experience.

They give the experienced support to the likes of Brendon Jones, James Flaherty and Kristin Thornton that was needed, and Orzel is enjoying his leadership role in the team despite it being his first season with the Mandurah-based club.

"With the recruiting this year they just wanted a few experienced guys and players who have been around the traps a bit more instead of getting someone from over east who they don't really know too much about. It's great that we can help out as experienced players to back up BJ and Kristin Thornton," he said.

"This year I suppose I am a bit of a leader. With the leadership group we've got BJ, James Flaherty and Kristin Thornton, and they do a really good job with the young guys and it's good to be another guy with a bit of experience who can help the young players with what they work on and just encourage them all the time."

Orzel now can't wait for his first clash against Claremont as a Peel player which will come next week after the bye this weekend. Peel will look to upset the reigning premiers at Bendigo Bank Stadium, but for Orzel is looking forward to battling his ex-teammates.

"I can't wait for it, it will be good. I think it's May 12 and all the guys will be great about it," Orzel said.

"There's no hard feelings with anyone there at Claremont, but it will be a little strange still. I'll just have to try and rough Lukey Blackwell up a little bit and try to beat them."

Bring a bra campaign

Bring a bra campaign

By Josh Halliday from The Mandurah Mail

THE 100 Bras for 200 Girls campaign is a heart warming initiative that was born out of tragedy.

Whilst holidaying in Bali on a football trip in December 2010 Mitch Gillam was tragically killed in a scooter accident.

The Peel Thunder Football Club has taken the opportunity to support the Gillam family in this campaign as they have been long term sponsors, supporters, and currently Mitch’s cousin Brennan works as community development officer and is a player for the club.

As a memorial to Mitch’s energy, adventurous spirit and desire to meet any challenge head on his family and friends need the help of the community.

“In February 1800 bras were collected, taken to Bali and distributed amongst the desperately poor, however, it was seeing the sheer joy on the face of a woman in tattered clothing when she was handed a beautiful, lacy, feminine bra that a new goal of 10,000 bras was set,” mother of Mitch and campaign co-organiser Sue Gillam said.

“I’m sure there are many of you who can offer support by donating your unwanted, unused, oversized, too bright, not bright enough, too sexy, not sexy enough bras to this fun campaign.”

The WAFL fixture on Saturday, May 19 showcases Peel Thunder taking on East Perth at Bendigo Bank Stadium in conjunction with Ladies Day which is now supporting the Friends helping Friends campaign ‘Bring a Bra Day’ campaign and raising funds and awareness of ovarian cancer.

“Please bring any unwanted, near new bras along to the game and pop them in the pink bins provided,” Mrs Gillam said.

“If you are unable to make it to the game the Peel Thunder Football Club on Dower Street, Mandurah is now a drop off location and any bras can be left at the front office.

“The family and friends of Mitch Gillam thank Peel Thunder for their support and believe this will be a true culmination of our belief in the Friends Helping Friends campaign.

The Ladies Day is dedicated to raising awareness of ovarian cancer with Thunder fans asked to don a touch of teal colour in their dress style for a colourful kick off at 2pm.

Tickets are on sale for $35 and are available from the Peel Thunder reception.

AFL legend and 1986 Brownlow medallist Robert Dipierdomenico "The Big Dipper" is the guest speaker at the Corporate Club luncheon Friday 18th May.

Beginning his career with the Hawthorn Football Club in 1975, DiPierdomenico, or the "Big Dipper" as he is affectionately known, kick-started his career in 1978, culminating in a best-on-ground performance in the 1978 VFL Grand Final. He went on to play 240 games and kick 130 goals with the Hawks, retiring in 1991, including 5 day and 5 night premierships with one of the most successful eras of domination a club has ever seen.

DiPierdomenico was initially assigned guernsey number #53, but subsequently wore number #9.

He was known for his toughness (which led to many trips to the Tribunal), and the moustachioed Dipper was one of the much-loved, and most media-covered characters in the VFL during the 1980s.

DiPierdomenico somehow managed to avoid the Tribunal in 1986 to win the Brownlow Medal, tying withGreg Williams, who was playing for Sydney at the time. Later in the week, he would win his third Premiership medallion as the Hawks defeated Carlton by 42 points.

Late in the first quarter of the 1989 VFL Grand Final, DiPierdomenico was running backwards to take a mark when he was met solidly from behind by Geelong star Gary Ablett. The force of the collision broke several of DiPierdomenico's ribs and punctured one of his lungs. Despite the pain and unaware of the extent of the damage, DiPierdomenico continued to play until the final siren. Typically, he featured among Hawthorn's best players and also got reported. He collapsed shortly after the game and was rushed to the casualty ward of St. Vincent's Hospital, where doctors found out that Dipper had punctured a lung.
