HISTORY of the Peel Thunderbirds - WAWFL

The Peel Thunderbirds commenced in 2004 as a representative team in the Department of Sport and Recreation’s State All Star Female Football Carnival.

In 2007 the Thunderbirds program was changed to a talent and development program where the best youth girls within the Peel District were invited for a 6 week training program to develop their skills and fitness.

2008 saw the introduction of the WAFL Youth Girls Carnival in which the Peel Thunderbirds entered a side on completion of the development program.  The Thunderbirds were undefeated and the inaugural champions and followed up in 2009 to win back to back titles.

With the success of the program and a large number of graduates expressing interest the Peel Thunderbirds entered into the WA Women’s Football League Division 2 competition for 2010.

After a slow start the Peel Thunderbirds settled into senior football with a solid home and away season finishing second on the ladder.  The young squad’s improvement was outstanding as they marched through the finals series to become Division 2 premiers in their inaugural year.

In 2011 the Peel Thunderbirds took another step forward entering two teams in the WAWFL in both Division 1 and Division 2, playing finals in both divisions and the Grand Final in Division 1 losing by 11 points.

In 2012 the Club enters Premier League, the greatest challenge yet!
